hour training program, I was assigned to patrol on foot as well as in a
vehicle, enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
A regular police officer's training program is about 1040 hours.
In the capacity of a special police officer, I made numerous arrests for
crimes such as possession of drugs, distribution of drugs and possession
of firearms, although I found an unusual pleasure in making drug arrests,
I also made arrests for incidences such as disturbing the peace, domestic
violence, assault and battery, and various other crimes. Unfortunately,
not all of the people I worked with should have been in law
enforcement. While working at New World, I learned that when given
positions of authority some people abuse it. Most officers at New
World Security tried to do the right thing, but others would simply abuse their authorityand wrongfullytook people’s freedom away. During this
period of my life I became aware of the impact that this authority can
have in changing people’s lives.
Russell had graduated college and was working for a robotics
company called PRI, which required him to travel the world repairing
these machines. Even though he had a good job, he and I continued to
work at Beacon Video, part-time. Russell and I were like brothers. One
day Russell came to me and told me he and the owner of Beacon Video
had discussed Russell buying the video store. Russell knew I couldn’t
afford to put money in with him towards the purchase of the store.
Therefore he made me an offer. His suggestion was that if I agreed to
work at Beacon Video from open to close on the weekends without pay
for one full year; at the conclusion of that year, he would consider me
an equal partner.
Isaid, “Deal” without a thought. Iwasn’t supposed to start this
arrangement until he purchased the video store. We didn’t put this
agreement in writing, because we were brothers, in some ways more
brothers than our own brothers. We always looked out for each other,
even though it was usually Russell who taught me about life’s lessons,
and we simply didn’t think of it. A couple of months later Russell’s robotics job sent him to Italy for four months to work on their machines.
Even though he was thousands of miles away, we stayed in constant
contact and he gave me assignments to handle at Beacon Video. One
day he gave me an important assignment to handle during my shift.
Unfortunately, at the same time Francis needed to go to the
hospital, which caused me to have to get someone else to work at
Beacon in my place. During the following week, Russell called to get
the status of the assignment he'd given me. When I told him I hadn't
done what he’d asked, he was furious. I explained why I wasn't at work
and he simply didn't care. He started yelling at me and we got into a
rather heated argument. I attempted to explain to him why I didn't
complete the assignment in several ways, but he couldn't seem to get my
point. Therefore in a moment of frustration, I said,
“If I ever have to choose between Beacon Video and Francis, “Fuck
Beacon!!!”
With that said, we
